In the early days of the establishment of the Department of Systems Engineering in the late 1970s, Information Management and Information System were regarded as one of the main directions of research and teaching, which accumulated valuable research and teaching experience for the establishment of the Department and formed a reasonably structured professional team. In 1992, the Department was merged to form the School of System Science and System Engineering, with Information Management and Information System as the main training direction. In 1998, the discipline of Management Science and Engineering, together with the disciplines of Fudan University, Jiaotong University and Tongji University, was one of the first disciplines in Shanghai to receive a first-level doctoral program.
